4 Types of Interior Lighting - Tips Included

If you are tapping through dreamy homes and wonder what makes them look so amazing, chances are that it could be the types of lighting.

Lighting can make or break the ambience of a room. Light can also influence our mood – so it is essential to get it right. Because of this, we begin planning for the lighting early in the building process.

There are several aspects of lighting such as natural lighting, task lighting, ambient lighting and accent lighting. It is the combination of these light layers that makes a beautiful lighting scheme in your home.

Natural Lighting

Kelly Construction homes are known to come with an abundance of natural light, which is one of the things people love most about our homes. Our motto when it comes to windows is bigger is better. Large windows in common areas like the Great Room, Dining Room, Kitchen and Family Room can transform the ambience from dim and stuffy to bright and airy. If you already have large windows there are a few other tricks that can take it up a notch too!

  • Mirrors: You can add mirrors adjacent to the window or in dark spots to help bounce light around.

  • Color: Use lighter colors to boost the natural light.

  • Furniture: Keep furniture from blocking the natural light.

  • Doors: Add in doors with windows, sidelights or transoms.

Task Lighting

Task Lighting is the illumination for work related activities such as cooking, reading or brushing teeth. Most of the time these are recessed lights.

Ambient Lighting

Ambient lighting, or general lighting, is intended to light up a room in its entirety and provides a uniform level of illumination. This would be your ceiling fixtures, wall sconces and lamps.

Accent Lighting

Accent lighting is used mainly to focus on a specific point of interest. An example of this that we use frequently in our Kelly Construction homes would be under cabinet lighting.

With early planning and the combination of layering these four basic types of lighting within a space, you will find yourself with a successful lighting scheme. Tag us in your Facebook and Instagram stories if you apply any of these interior lighting tips. We love seeing what you come up with.
