How To Decorate a Fireplace

As we are heading into fall and already getting a taste of those cooler days, I thought this was the perfect time to share tips on how to decorate a fireplace.

Most Kelly Construction floor plans come with a fireplace or two – sometimes even three. Can you imagine having three cozy places in your home to cuddle up by? That sounds heavenly to me! Snuggling up with a blanket, coffee, book and your furry friend sounds like the best way to spend the colder months.

To begin decorating your fireplace you will need to break it into three main areas:

  • Left Side

  • Right Side

  • Middle

Sides

On the sides you may have a little more room to work with depending on the function of your middle space (see below). I tend to like a little different element on each side to add visual interest.

For example, on one side you can do some sort of greenery – whether it is fake or real that is up to you.

On the other side you can do some candles, candlesticks or a fun vase.

Middle

The middle is the hardest to decorate because you typically have the most limited space there.

If you have a TV above the fireplace, which most of you probably do, it can be a little more challenging to decorate.

You will want decorations with a lower profile like a tray or wooden bowl to avoid covering part of the TV screen. You can also use a short planter if your TV is mounted.

If you do not have a TV above the fireplace, you will want to find a main focal piece to anchor it all together. This can be a mirror, piece of art or a cool sculptural element.

Next I would add some varying heights, but not too symmetrical. Having organic shapes and layering items is key to a beautifully designed fireplace mantel.

Feel free to share what you come up with for your fireplace. Tag us in your Facebook and Instagram stories when you apply these decorating tips. We always love seeing what you come up with.

Kindly,

Stephanie
