4 Things to Consider When Styling Open Shelves

Open shelving can be a great way to decorate your space. Styling open shelving can be a challenge though.

Many people I talk to are torn on this design trend. They love the look of open shelving, but are worried they won’t know how to style them correctly. Here are four things to consider when styling open shelves in your home.

Function vs Decoration

Finding the balance between function and decoration is of utmost importance. Especially if the shelves are taking the place of your upper cabinets. Open shelves need to be functional as well as look good. On my open shelves, I have the glasses we use everyday as well as my favorite kitchen items such as copper mugs and decorative bowls.

Color

Use dishes that are a single color, white or clear glass so it does not look messy. Adding texture with things that have a neutral feel is also a good way to keep it from feeling bland. Cutting boards, wooden bowls, anything woven or small green accents are all great ideas to add in.

Shapes & Sizes

Use items with different heights and shapes. Mixing new and old items to your open shelves gives it more interest and style.

Space

Leave some breathing room. When styling open shelves, less is more. It can go from cute to cluttered very easily. Be sure to limit how many items you put on each shelf.

Once you have your shelves styled it is time to step back and take a look. You might want to add or take away pieces until you get it just right!
